leave a story about Hart and/or picture(s) to Below is the obituary that was printed in the SF Chronicle The dearly loved son of George 0. and Eleanor Hart Smith, Hart Smith was born on May 21, 1918 and left life peacefully on January 9, 2008. Hart graduated from Galileo High School in 1936 and University of California at Berkeley in 1940. During WW II, he served in the US Navy. The Smith family owned and operated the Mark Hopkins Hotel and Hart developed the idea for the Lochinvar Room and the Kiltie Bar, known for stocking many different labels of the finest Scotch. Hart also had the idea for the Vienna Coffee House. Hart was a great lover and generous patron of the arts. He served as president of Spring Opera in the early 1960s and on the board for many years. He was the original donor of the supertitles for the San Francisco Opera as well as a generous supporter of the San Francisco Ballet, the Symphony and the San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts. He also belonged to the Guardsmen. Hart was a ban vivant; he loved fine wines and exceptional food. He was a generous host, a superb raconteur and had a wonderful sense of humor and a ready wit. He belonged to the Bohemian Club for 66 years and the Wine & Food Society since 1961. Hart had a passion for sailing and owned a succession of yachts all named “The Hasty Heart.” He enjoyed entertaining friends on cruises to Mexico in the winter and Hawaii in the summer. Hart will be sorely missed by grieving friends Ruth and Joan Quigley, Cohn Sprang, Rick and Bridget Pearce, Kay Welles, goddaughter, Mimi Wells and her husband Rob, Gil Vilanueva, Ross Todd, Doug McPhillips, Jeff Shug and all the crew of the Hasty Heart, Alicia Arias, Edgar Benhard and Wade Sample. He will also be greatly missed at the Grove by his carnpmates in Faraway Camp. Memorial services will be held at a later date to celebrate the wonderful life of a wonderful man.
